What is in my Garden?
Let’s nip this question in the bud right now.
Pun intended.
I love gardens. Especially when someone else maintains them so beautifully. There is my friend “Farmer John” who shares the bounty of his summer vegetable garden, and my bestie Anna, who, despite the Phoenix heat, manages to grow both edible herbs and beautiful flowers.
Alas, although green is my favorite color, my thumbs are not.
I did manage to keep a pothos house plant alive for about 7 years. That was back in my twenties.
Lots of iris and a few tulips and daffodils planted in the yard by my home’s former owner decades ago appear spontaneously in the spring. I planted another 200 bulbs. The squirrels watched me. Need I say more? They had an expensive dinner.
Paty brought me a sweet little pot of rosemary from her garden for my birthday one year, with a note from Practical Magic, “Always plant rosemary by the garden gate.”
The little plant grew on my counter, but rosemary likes to be outdoors, and with frost coming, it wasn’t the right time to plant it. I used the rosemary to flavor soup, baked chicken, and focaccia bread.
Is rosemary planted by your garden gate?
The old adage,
Rosemary is for remembrance.
I now associate rosemary’s scent with Paty. I miss her droll humor and gracious smile.
